| Elbow InjuriesThere are many injuries and conditions that can be caused by or present similar symptoms as a Tennis Elbow injury. Only a proper examination by your doctor will help you know for sure what the cause of your discomfort or mobility issues are. It is important to seek medical attention when suffering pain, unfamiliar sensations (like tingling or numbness), and range of motion issues. Your doctor will help develop a treatment plan for you that includes conservative treatment methods such as:
Unless you have a major tear or rupture, your doctor will prescribe conservative treatments for your elbow before even suggesting surgery. It is generally understood by doctors and surgeons, that surgery will introduce more scar tissue into the any already damaged tissue and this added scar tissue is problematic. Scar tissue requires significant PT and conservative treatment options post-surgery and outcomes can often be less than what you might hope for. If not dealt with properly, your elbow injury could end up in worse condition than before the surgery! This is why surgery is only performed as a last resort. What Is Wrong With My Elbow?Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer's Elbow) will show the same symptoms as Tennis Elbow, except that pain will be experienced on the inside of your elbow. Only a certified medical professional will be able to determine if you are suffering from Golfer's Elbow. OsteoChondritis typically affects children and teenagers between the ages of 10-16. In fact it is sometimes referred to as "Little League Elbow". This condition, caused by loss of blood supply, causes pieces of bone or cartilage to become loose from the elbow. The loose bodies may stay in place or fall into the joint cavity. This can cause intense pain and immobility. You may feel a catching and locking, or popping sensation when you move your arm. A Cold Compress or Ice Pack will reduce swelling, but overuse will lead to restricted blood flow which is not conducive to healing. Knowing this, we advise clients suffering from Osteochondritis to speak with their physician about utilizing a blood flow enhancement device like the Elbow TShellz Wrap®. If conservative treatment fails, sometimes arthroscopic surgery is necessary to remove cartilage or bone pieces and smooth cartilage surfaces. Elbow ArthritisArthritis & Osteoarthritis (OA) of the Elbow occurs when elbow cartilage is damaged or worn down and arthritis can be happen even from a fracture or elbow dislocation. However, just like with Tennis Elbow, the most common way to develop arthritis in your elbow is from overuse. Repeatedly exerting more stress on the elbow than it can handle can, over time, cause degeneration of the bone and tissues in your elbow. Undue strain could also cause an injury to the surrounding ligaments and if a ligament or other structure is injured, your body will compensate with improper movements (generally, referred to as "compensation"). When your elbow is forced to move in improper or unnatural ways, the potential of developing arthritis greatly increases. Symptoms of arthritis typically include pain and restricted range of motion. You could feel a "grating" sensation caused by uneven inner-elbow surfaces moving against each other. A 'locking' sensation can be felt if loose pieces of cartilage or bone breaks away and sits in-between the moving structures of your elbow. In latter stages of the condition, arthritis sufferers may experience swelling and swelling associated pain. You may even experience numbness or a tingling sensation in some fingers or around your elbow. Your physician will typically use an X-Ray machine to determine if you are suffering from arthritis. In the early stages of the condition, arthritis symptoms can be effectively treated with conservative treatments. Your doctor may suggest a corticosteroid injection. While a corticosteroid injection can provide pain relief it will not treat the underlying cause of your condition. Like any medication, there are side effects. As you probably know, when it comes to arthritis - the only real cure is surgery. However, we do offer a protocol that most of our clients have used to manage their arthritis symptoms very effectively. First, if there is swelling, get the swelling down through the use of a Cold Compress or Ice Pack on your elbow. After the swelling is down, treat yourself with the Elbow TShellz Wrap® after getting out of bed, in the middle of the day and before you go to bed at night. In Between Treatments With TShellz Wrap®, Apply Our New Fast Acting Pain Relief Cream Called ARNICA INFUSIONDealing with aches and pains affecting the foot, ankle, leg, knee, hamstring, hip, back, arm, shoulder, elbow, wrist, or hand? If so, then applying the Arnica Infusion to any of these targeted areas will bring about fast relief from the pain and sore tissues. Simply apply a small amount of cream to the body and moments later, you will experience a soothing and comforting sensation over the area. Arnica Infusion is specially designed to relieve pain due to sore muscles and joints associated with arthritis, backaches, sprains, strains, and bruises. So we focused our time and resources over the past few years and came up, with we believe, will be one of more effective, fast acting, topical pain relief creams on the market. You are likely familiar with some of the standard topical agents on the market as most of our customers use them. The are mass marketed and even found in most department stores now. Well, we are here to say that Arnica Infusion goes many steps beyond what they offer. Made in the USA at an FDA registered manufacturing facility, you can be assured that Arnica Infusion is both safe and effective. Best of all, it feels very nice on the skin! Each application of Arnica Infusion feels so comforting and soothing, we are certain it will become an item you will not want to live without. If you have suffered a severe injury or the cartilage of your elbow is worn out, you may need to have surgery. Arthritis Elbow surgery can involve smoothing out and removing loose pieces of cartilage or bone, constructing thicker surfaces with your own tissues, or if necessary, a total joint replacement. If your arthritic elbow condition becomes too much to bear, your physician may advise surgery to deal with your arthritic joint. In cases such as this, know that the Elbow TShellz Wrap® is a fantastic rehabilitation tool for your post-surgery recovery plan. Speak to your doctor, surgeon and/or physical therapist make sure that these tools are recommended home treatments for your specific case. Read more about Post Surgery Rehabilitation & Healing here. BursitisElbow Bursitis is a condition involving the thin, liquid filled capsules in the elbow called bursae. Bursae are located throughout the body acting as a cushion between bone and soft tissue. The bursae rest between the pointy end of your bone and the tissues of your elbow, allowing tendons, muscles and ligaments to move across bony areas without fraying or encountering friction. Bursitis can be caused by -
Septic Elbow Bursitis - If elbow bursae are infected, the elbow will typically become red, feel warm and possibly swell noticeably. If left untreated, a bacterial infection in the bursae can turn liquid to pus which can randomly open and drain; this infection can move into the bloodstream causing serious illness. If your physician believes you have an infection, they may remove some of the liquid using a needle. This will reduce swelling and help test for bacterial growth. If bacteria are the cause of your bursitis, your physician may prescribe an antibiotic medication. Important! If you think you may have an infected bursa, (known as septic bursitis) see a physician right away - it is a very serious condition that could quickly become life-threatening. Most cases of bursitis, however, are not septic. They are still extremely painful injuries that will seriously debilitate you if you in fact are experiencing it. If your bursitis is not septic (your doctor will tell you whether it is or not), your doctor will opt for the safest and best plan which is conservative treatment - Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE) and possible anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling and provide symptom relief. Nerve EntrapmentNerve Entrapment Syndromes - Pinched nerves, also known as 'nerve entrapment' is caused when the bones, muscles, tendons, or other inner-elbow structures place pressure on small tubes surrounding a nerve. These tubes squeeze tightly around the nerve resulting in pain, limited arm mobility, and weakness in the hand, wrist or fingers. Some pinched nerves can cause a tingling or numbing sensation in your hand, forearm, or elbow. The similarity of these symptoms to those found in Tennis Elbow is why pinched nerves are easily mistaken for the same condition. There are three main nerves in your arm that can be affected by a nerve entrapment syndromes: the medial, radial and ulnar nerve. The specific symptoms that occur are based on which of these nerves is entrapped. Two well known nerve entrapment syndromes specifically associate with the elbow are Cubital Tunnel Syndrome (mobile phone Elbow) and Radial Tunnel Syndrome. Typically, a pinched nerve can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications, rest, and stretching. Cold compression and Circulatory Boost treatments will reduce swelling and increase blood flow naturally. Sometimes, surgery is needed to treat nerve entrapment. If conservative treatments fail, your physician may recommend surgery as a last resort. Bicep RuptureBicep Rupture: This is not a common injury but can occur from lifting heavy weight. The bicep attaches at your shoulder and a tendon near the elbow. If too much force is exerted on the tendon it can rip causing the bicep to rupture. You may even hear or feel tearing when this injury occurs. Symptoms can include:
Bicep Rupture is almost always treated through surgery to reattach the torn tendon. The type of surgery used depends on the damage done to the tissue and the amount of time that has elapsed since injury. Postoperative treatment will include PT exercises, a protective brace or splint, and conservative treatments. Know that the use of an Elbow TShellz Wrap® is highly applicable for reattachment post-surgeries as this treatment stimulates healing and growth while improving elasticity and flexibility of soft tissue. This is explained further in the Post Surgery Rehabilitation & Healing section here. Elbow Injuries Not Only Affect the Elbow- But Can Lead to Other Conditions and Injuries.Every time we use our injured elbow, damaged and swollen tendons and muscle tissue move; when they are inflamed, every movement hurts. With injured tissue, pain happens - sometimes a LOT of pain, so we try not to move it. So, when doing something we need to use our elbow for (getting dressed, driving, talking on the phone), we start to use the shoulder and even the neck more. If we can, we use our other elbow instead, even though it is inconvenient and usually the non-dominant elbow. A couple days later (after purposefully avoiding movement of our elbow), the pain has gone down (as well as the swelling) and this is where the trouble begins! The pain disappeared with the swelling but we still aren't fully healed! Not knowing this, we start using our elbow normally again and then the pain shows up again like it did before - all because the injury wasn't fully healed in the first place. Eventually, we use the other elbow more and more - or even use our shoulder and neck instead of our elbow for a lengthy period of time. This is why these other areas start to hurt - they are being overused now. Soon, aches and pain can become commonplace in the upper body - all as a result of the original elbow injury and the body's instinctive nature to "protect" the orginal elbow injury - all because the injury wasn't fully healed in the first place! We continually re-injure the elbow epicondylitis through our daily activities and now this injury has become a chronic elbow injury.Muscle imbalances result, placing tension on bone and softer tissues - leading to a misalignment within the upper body. The extra stress on the opposite side of the body will also result in weakness and fatigue of the tissues - increasing the chances they can eventually be injured or gradually degenerate. This is a textbook example of how you get an overcompensation injury. In some cases, physical therapists warn that overcompensation can be very dangerous as it will affect gait or alignment on a permanent basis. An injury to one elbow can easily lead to straining in other areas, making an overall recovery hard to initiate. For example, a serious muscle strain in the right elbow can often lead to over-straining of the left elbow. Most commonly, the injury occurs on the dominant side, so the risk of straining the other (weaker) side increases. The longer the injury (and corresponding pain) persists, the greater the chance that you will sustain more strain from overcompensation, eventually leading to issues in those areas as well. To minimize potential secondary injuries, know that it is important to deal with your elbow injury quickly and completely. Truly, chronic elbow injuries can become a vicious cycle - which is why it is absolutely critical to focus on methods that improve and strengthen the injured tissues in a timely manner. The faster you truly heal, the less chance you have of sinking into a downward spiral of re-injury, scar tissue growth and overcompensation injuries. Okay, So I Have an Elbow Injury...What Should I Do Now?Stage 1: If the elbow injury is very recent - use a good quality cold pack and Arnica Pain Relief Cream.Note: If you are suffering from a soft tissue injury that has been going on for awhile, then skip the cold treatment as inflammation will be minimal. Anytime you are experiencing significant pain, you may find our Arnica Infusion Pain Relief Cream to be quite helpful. If you are experiencing pain and swelling in the very early stages of the injury (first 48 to 72 hours), the first step in a conservative treatment protocol would be to focus on reducing the discomfort by applying a quality cold pack to the injured elbow, then a high quality pain relief cream such as our Arnica Infusion Cream (after the cold pack treatment). Not only will you use your cold pack for the first 48 to 72 hours after the injury, but you should also use it during other stages of the healing process. Some examples include...
Having a Cold Compress or Ice Pack available at home to use if and when the need arises is helpful. Many of you already do so. However, too many people over-focus on cold while ignoring the most critical aspect to healing - nourishing the injured tissues with a healthy supply of blood flow needed to repair and rebuild the injured tissues. This leads to the most important recommendation... Stage 2: Focus on Increasing Blood Flow To The Injured Tissue - As This is The ONLY Way It Will Heal For the Long-TermEven though the concept is simple, improving blood flow to injured tissues can be difficult. When the injury is elbow related, the challenges are even greater. Traditional methods require your muscle to move to promote blood flow (exercise), but that same motion that promotes blood flow can at times lead to making your pain and condition worse.
Most people we deal with tell us these scenarios have happened to them many times in the past. Perhaps it has already happened to you. Promoting blood flow within a muscle or soft tissue injury to help the body heal itself is a concept that has been utilized for centuries. This is where the focus has to be if you are seeking long-term improvement. Oxygen and nutrients, carried within the blood, are critical for the body to heal itself. Without proper blood flow, recovering from an injury or condition will be delayed...sometimes for a very long period of time. The real challenge is how do you promote blood flow to the elbow injury site without causing further injury? This goal is further complicated by the fact the elbow (and muscles controlling the elbow joint) are involved in the majority of the physical movements we perform each day. The Elbow TShellz Wrap® - Heal Your Elbow For The Long TermThe best option we came across in our research to accomplish true healing of elbow injuries is the Elbow TShellz Wrap®. Use of this device results in a dramatic increase in blood flow to the injured tissues located deeper within the body - all in a non-invasive manner. Using a TShellz Wrap® will not expose you to the risk of causing further harm to soft tissue like you can when using rigorous exercise. The Elbow TShellz Wrap® accomplishes the goal of enhanced blood flow without the need for intensive exercise and as such reduces your risk of re-injury. Who Should Use the TShellz Wrap®We recommend the use of a TShellz Wrap®:
Increased Blood Circulation = Increased Healing Rate TShellz Wraps® contain a unique, flexible Carbon Fiber Energy Pad which is flexible and will shape to conform to your body. This Energy Pad emits a uniform wave of perfectly safe energy over its entire surface. This energy is absorbed by soft tissue in your elbow and forearm, opening blood vessels, resulting in an increase in blood flow. Increased blood circulation is what your body needs to accelerate the healing of soft tissue and this is why we recommend the Elbow TShellz Wrap®. The Elbow TShellz Wrap® is an FDA Registered Medical Device and is suitable for use in therapeutic clinics and FROM HOME. It is completely safe for people and patients to use for themselves. The technology found in a TShellz Wrap® has been in use for decades in the worlds of professional and amateur sports - a contributing factor as to why athletes seem to recover from injuries so quickly. Have you ever wondered by an athlete can return to activity after 3 or 4 weeks following a knee injury - while your average person takes much longer to return back to normal? The secret isn't really that much of a secret - it involves consistent conservative treatments such as the TShellz Wrap® to help stimulate blood flow to injured soft tissue. Most athletes have the luxury of using in-house facilities many times per day. How many us can afford the time and money to visit a clinic multiple times a day? Very few indeed. This is how you can gain the same advantage that athletes enjoy via quick recovery from soft tissue injuries - by using a device like the Elbow TShellz Wrap® two or three times a day on a consistent basis. Consistent Treatments = Consistent And Long Term Improvement What Else Makes the Elbow TShellz Wrap® So Special? We believe the TShellz Wrap® to be one of the most effective treatments for stimulating blood flow to soft tissue that is inactive due to injury. We can promise that you will receive a product that is designed to be safe and does what it is supposed to do...quickly relieve pain and aid in the recovery from tendon, muscle and other soft tissue injuries. The unit plugs into a standard wall outlet to get its power. The nice thing about the power supply is that the same unit can be used in North America and overseas as well. When Should I Use My TShellz Wrap During the Day?The most common question we receive from individuals prior to purchasing is - how many times a day should I be using my elbow wraps and when should I be using them? While treatment plans will differ for each individual and their specific injury, there are general guidelines that should be adhered to.
The Elbow TShellz Wrap® would then be used:
